Abstract Wildland fires are a critical natural hazard in many regions of the World. Every year, millions of hectares are burned in Tropical, Boreal and Mediterranean forest, which causes a wide variety of effects, from atmospheric emissions, to soil erosion, biodiversity loss and drainage alterations. Reduction of those negative effects of fire requires to improve current fire risk assessment methods. Wildland firerisk assessment is a very significant issue. This risk assessment is usually based on ignition probability due to meteorological or human factors, but it does not usually consider propagation danger when a wildland fire has started. To evaluate propagation danger, it is necessary to apply some propagation model and simulate the behaviour of the fireline. However, this propagation danger must be evaluated considering many different possible scenarios. Therefore, the amount of simulations that must be carried out is enormous and it is necessary to apply high-performance computing techniques to make the methodology feasible. In this paper, a method for creating propagation danger maps based on factorial experimentation is described. The methodology was applied at a southern Europe scale during the 2004 summer season.

متن کاملHuman influence on California fire regimes.
Periodic wildfire maintains the integrity and species composition of many ecosystems, including the mediterranean-climate shrublands of California. However, human activities alter natural fire regimes, which can lead to cascading ecological effects. Increased human ignitions at the wildland-urban interface (WUI) have recently gained attention, but fire activity and risk are typically estimated ...
متن کاملStrategic Planning and Budgeting of Wildland Fire Preparedness Programs for Risk Management
In approaches that were previously used, preparedness planning used tactical modelling of individual fire events and resource deployment. Results from modelling individual fire events were typically gathered to construct a program analysis at the planning unit or at the landscape level. This research deviates from those tactical-based approaches by using strategic modelling to inform planning a...
متن کاملToward improved communication about wildland fire: mental models research to identify information needs for natural resource management.
The management of natural- and human-induced wildland fires is an intricate process that must balance two considerations: that of fire as a necessary natural disturbance and that of the risks that fire poses. Reconciling tradeoffs between these risks and benefits is contingent upon informed, directed, and two-way communication between wildland fire managers and stakeholders. In an effort to aid...
متن کاملResource Sharing for Control of Wildland Fires
Wildland fires (or wildfires) occur on all continents except for Antarctica. These fires threaten communities, change ecosystems, destroy vast quantities of natural resources and the cost estimates of the damage done annually is in the billions of dollars. Controlling wildland fires is resource-intensive and there are numerous examples where the resource demand has outstripped resource availabi...
